Governor O'Malley Provides Funding for Dorchester County Storm Recovery

ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 4, 2008) – Governor Martin O’Malley announced today that Dorchester County will receive $677,000 in state funds to assist it in paying for major repairs to six local roads damaged by severe storms in June 2006.

“This is an investment in our infrastructure that will benefit county residents and visitors for decades to come,” said Governor O’Malley.  “Our goal is to rebuild these damaged roads in a way so they are stronger than before and able to withstand the force of future storms.  Working together, we are building a stronger Dorchester County.”

Severe flooding caused by the 2006 storm damaged six major roads including: Cokesbury Road; Palmers Mill Road; Galestown Reliance Road; Whiteley Road; Palmers Mill Road; and River Road.  The cost of reconstructing and improving these roads exceeded original estimates requiring the additional advance of state funding.  Total cost of repair for the six projects is $6.7 million.  While the majority of the funding comes from the federal government, Dorchester County must pay a local matching share amounting to nearly $1.7 million of the total.  The state has already advanced more than $1 million to Dorchester County for its local share.  The state funds will be paid back in installments over the next eight years utilizing the county’s share of local highway user revenues that it receives each year from Maryland’s Transportation Trust Fund.
