Governor Martin O'Malley Delivers Remarks Before Democratic Women's Club of Worcester County
ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 23, 2008) – Governor Martin O’Malley, joined by Senator Barbara Mikulski, shared lunch and delivered remarks before the Women’s Democratic Club of Worcester County in Ocean Pines today, during the Governor’s trip to the Eastern Shore for the 2008 Maryland Municipal League Convention in Ocean City. Governor O’Malley’s remarks focused on Maryland’s progress, and the shared commitment all Marylanders have to the future of our State.
“Having restored a long-missing spirit of consensus in Annapolis, we have banded together over these last 16 months, as One Maryland, to make real and steady progress for our working families,” said Governor O’Malley. “Over the last year, our job growth rate has outpaced the national average by 400 percent. Our unemployment rate is 26 percent lower, and according to the most recent report by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, Maryland is among the top three jurisdictions for women economically.”
Touting unprecedented investments in education under the O’Malley-Brown Administration, Governor O’Malley said, “Armed with a state government that actually works, together we’ve been able to make record investments in K-12 education, providing $5.3 billion for our schools – including almost $14 million for school construction and renovation right here in Worcester County. In their first two years, our predecessor’s allocated just $2 million. That’s a 600 percent increase.”
Focusing on the importance of preserving Maryland’s natural beauty, particularly in a setting like the Eastern Shore, Governor O’Malley remarked on statewide initiatives to protect the environment. “As we continue building a more sustainable future, we also created the Bay 2010 Trust Fund, fully funded Program Open Space for two years straight, and for the first time in 25 years, together, we strengthened our Critical Areas law. We’re also taking hold of our energy future, setting one of the most ambitious energy reduction goals in the nation, joining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, and increasing our investment in the next generation of renewable technologies.”
Governor O’Malley shared lunch with Senator Mikulski and the members of the Women’s Democratic Club of Worcester County while in Ocean City for the 2008 Maryland Municipal League Convention, where he will deliver the keynote address tomorrow night.
