Governor O'Malley Appoints Three Members to Baltimore County Board of Education
Annapolis, MD (July 29, 2008) – Governor Martin O’Malley today announced the appointment of David Uhlfelder, James Coleman, and Valerie Roddy to the Baltimore County Board of Education.
“I am proud to appoint David Uhlfelder, James Coleman, and Valerie Roddy to the Baltimore County Board of Education,” said Governor O’Malley. “I am confident that these new Board Members possess the skill and the leadership necessary to ensure every child in Baltimore County receives the quality public education they deserve.”
“The three new members of the Board of Education of Baltimore County are extremely qualified to serve based on their experience, professionalism, their openness to various points of view and most importantly, for their love of children,” said Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith. “I am confident they will serve the children of Baltimore County well.”
Each appointee is a resident of Baltimore County. Below is background information on the three appointees:
David Uhlfelder – David Uhlfelder is a Certified Public Accountant and works for his own private practice. He is current Chairman to the Baltimore County Workforce Development Council, and a member of the Pikesville Chamber of Commerce and the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants. He currently serves on the Baltimore County Economic Advisory Committee, the Caroline Center Upholstery Advisory Committee, the Budget & Finance and Audit & Compliance Committees for LifeBridge Health Systems. Mr. Uhlfelder graduated six children from the Baltimore County School System, and has served on various PTAs including Fort Garrison Elementary School, Pikesville Middle School and Pikesville High School. Mr. Uhlfelder received his bachelor’s degree in Business and Public Administration from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1956 and received his Certified Public Accountant Certificate in 1958.
James Coleman – James Coleman is a Professor of Mathematics for Baltimore City Community College, where he has taught for 22 years. Prior to that, he was an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Coppin State University. Mr. Coleman is a member of the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Developmental Education Association of Mathematics (DEAM) and the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He has received the “Focus on Teaching Award” from the Maryland State Board of Community Colleges, the “Teaching Excellence Award” from the Annual International Conference on Teaching Excellence, and he is listed as one of Baltimore City Community College’s “10 Best Instructors.” Mr. Coleman received his Bachelor of Science from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina in 1964, and his Masters in Mathematics from Morgan State University in 1970.
Valerie Roddy – Valerie Roddy is an Assistant Director to the Deputy Secretary for Public Health Services at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Prior to that, she served as Chief of the Bureau of Administrative Support Services for the Baltimore County Department of Health. She has served in a number of roles for Baltimore County government including Baltimore County Public Schools, the Office of Budget and Finance, the Office of Planning, and the Department of Community Development. She was also a legislative assistant to State Senator Norman Stone, Jr. from 1978 to 1982. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Salisbury University.
