March 3, 2008
(Schoolchildren singing)
Governor O’Malley: That was terrific.
Children: Thank you, Governor O’Malley.
Governor O’Malley: Thank you, guys. I’m proud of you. You guys are going to be so smart. Make sure you read all the time, okay? You promise me?
Children: Yes.
Governor O’Malley: Promise me you’ll read whenever you can. And you don’t always need Dr. Suess. You can read the newspaper, right? I bet you can read the signs on the road, right? The stop signs? So you try to read whenever and however you can. You can read magazines, whatever it takes. You can read books, that’s best. But if you read, you’re going to become -- what?
Children: Smarter.
Governor O’Malley: Smart. And I need you to be as smart as you can possibly be, because your State needs you, your country needs you and we’re counting on you, okay?
Children: Okay.
Governor O’Malley: You promise me?
Children: Yes.
Governor O’Malley: Promise me?
Children: Yes.
Governor O’Malley: Okay. I love you guys. Thanks very, very much. And thanks for letting me read to you.
