February 9: Maryland State Police Make Record Drug Seizure
Dear Friend,
Today, Lt. Governor Brown and I joined with Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel Terrence B. Sheridan to meet with and thank four distinguished Maryland State Troopers and one very special K-9 named Bruno who seized 32 pounds of heroin, the largest amount of heroin recovered during a traffic stop in the history of the Maryland State Police.
Public safety is undoubtedly the most important responsibility we have as a State and is the foundation on which all progress can be made to strengthen and protect our middle class, to improve public safety and public education, and to expand opportunity for the hard-working families of our State.
On February 5, 2008, Sergeant Daniel W. Fairburn, Trooper First Class Howard D. Kennard, Trooper First Class Joseph M. Catalano, Trooper First Class C. Michael Conner and Bruno, the K-9, seized a record 32 pounds of heroin during a routine traffic stop along I-95. This historic seizure has an estimated street value of $4.4 million, but its cost on the untold number of our families and our neighbors in bordering states would have been immeasurable.
These distinguished officers have fundamentally made our State a safer place, as part of the "PACE team" of specially trained state troopers who patrol Maryland highways daily, interdicting and apprehending fugitives, drug smugglers, gun runners, and other criminals.
It was our pleasure today to honor them and all of the Maryland State Troopers who continue to make Maryland a stronger and safer place.
Sincerely,
Martin O'Malley
Governor
