February 15: Protecting our Seniors

Dear Friend, 

Today, I had the opportunity to join with Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, CareFirst CEO Chester Burrell and Delegate Peter Hammen to announce a new public-private partnership to expand access to healthcare and prescription drug coverage for more of our neighbors and seniors - making our entire State stronger.

Last year, we came together to expand healthcare coverage for more than 100,000 people in our State, and made it easier for small businesses to provide healthcare coverage. This morning we announced new legislation that would allow CareFirst to commit $4 million annually to fund prescription drug coverage for seniors enrolled in the Maryland Senior Prescription Drug Assistance Program.

As our nation faces an economic downturn, too many of our neighbors, especially our seniors, are forced to choose between paying for their prescription medications and putting food on their table. In Maryland, this is simply unacceptable and, through this new partnership, thousands of seniors will be given the assistance they need to pay for their medications.

Earlier this week, Lt. Governor Brown and I presented Maryland's federal priorities to Senator Mikulski and our congressional delegation in Washington DC.

Together, we proposed a number of projects, programs and legislative priorities that will continue to protect and improve public safety in our State, bolster homeland security, reinforce our commitment to our veterans, protect the health of our environment and the Chesapeake Bay, and strengthen our workforce and the health of our people.

As One Maryland, we will continue to work together with our private sector partners and our local and federal elected officials to protect our priorities and make Maryland even stronger
