February 29: Celebrating Living History

Dear Friend,

This week, in celebration of Black History Month, we gathered to reflect on the impact of leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Maryland's own Thurgood Marshall, Frederick Douglass, Harriett Tubman, and Senator Gwendolyn Britt. The profound message of peace and human dignity that they spread in their lifetimes has truly helped to ensure a better future for our children and our grandchildren.

We also came together to celebrate the accomplishments of three individuals in Maryland who are working everyday to expand opportunity and improve our quality of life. Dr. Tyrone Taborn, Lucille Clifton and Dr. Henry Brooks all choose to proclaim, through their own actions and words, that there is more that unites us than divides us. Their work reminds us that together, united in the dignity of every individual, we can build on our strengths, including our diversity, to make a positive difference in the lives of our neighbors.

As Black History Month comes to a close this year, we move forward with a renewed understanding that our shared past creates a shared responsibility to build a better and stronger tomorrow, together.

Sincerely,

Martin O'Malley
Governor
